How to get a Job in 30 days...

Yes that is right, I got a job. After being laid off for exactly 30 days (in this economy)! And it is a better job with an amazing company (T-Mobile).

The heading will be the title of my first book, but I will give you a hint...

Take one day off after something "devistating" like a layoff. And then GET OVER IT! Then work your buns off, be persistent, tell everyone you know you are looking for a job, put your resume up on every job board in the WORLD (get a good resume first - if you need help just ask) and then make sure you answer your phone every time it rings... You never know who may be calling to offer you a job!

I also want to take a moment to thank some people. First my beautiful wife, Sara. If you don't have someone truly amazing in your corner, go get one, but sorry Sara is mine, and she rocks... So you will have to get your own. To my baby boy Cohen your smiles (along with the cost of diapers) kept me going everyday. To Mathew for pushing me to always get new content up on the blog THANKS! Thanks also to Mimi Marty for helping watch the baby or make a meal or just give general encouragement. Mom, THANKS! Having someone to always say "I knew you would... get the intervew... second interview... do well... get the job... insert general support here. To the rest of my friends and family thank you all so much! To the readers I hope you got something out of this experience.

Ask. Believe. Recieve.

P.S. the pic is me after nailing my final interview!

Thank You 173.8.150.#

While I do not know who you are, or even where you come from, what I do know is that 173.8.150.# you are the 1,000th visitor to M.L. Baker Blogs!!!

How exciting is that? While I don't have a a cool t-shirt to give away or a button or a sticker I send you my thanks and lots of love!

On the love side of things I wanted to bring up a point, or really a question to pose to all of my readers. Do you love yourself?

Seems like a silly question right? Or is it? I ask this because how often do you think to ask yourself, "Self, do I love you?" And then answer the question. I know in this day and age people would say that is such a selfish question. I am here to tell you it is not a selfish question at all. You cannot love anyone else until you love yourself. Think about that for a while.

And what exactly does this have to do with getting a job you ask? Well I will tell you (but then again you expected that didn't you?). If you don't love yourself, if you don't find value in your skills and what you bring to the table at an interview how is the hiring manager going to find any love for you?

You remember Al Franken, aka Stuart Smalley from Saturday Night Live when he he would look into the mirror and say, "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough and doggone it people like me!" It is true! When is the last time you looked at yourself in the mirror, smiled and said, "(Insert your name here), I love you! You are a great employee, you work hard, you overachieve and you are an asset to any company you work for!" Say it loud enough and long enough and trust me, you will begin to believe it. And if you believe it than you have no choice but to exude those feelings on to your resume, your cover letter and your soon to be new boss when you sit down for an actualinterview!

That's all I have today! And remember, I love you, because I love me!

The Unemployment Update

Time is flying these days. The Thanksgiving Holiday is over, and we had way too much fun, and now we are talking about Christmas, CHRISTMAS? When does a guy have time to update his blog, change poopy diapers, make and post videos, let alone anytime with his wife, and well forget about sleep, it's so overrated anyway!

And what is that you say, oh yeah, the job hunt, I am supposed to be finding a job too? Well here is what is going on! I have have an interview this coming Monday with a Wireless Provider to be their Major Account Executive (working with mid to major accounts of 50 to 1,000 employees) selling cellular contracts, phones, mobile broadband serves, etc here in Colorado Springs. I cannot begin to tell everyone just how excited I am for this interview. Not only are they a major player in the personal cell phone industry, but they are really making a push to pick up the business side of things too. That is exciting for me as this is a position that they have not had before. So I get to do my thing, blaze new trails, you know sling from the hip! Just my style.

All of this means I have been spending the last few days since Turkey day studying. Yes, studying! This leads me to Wacky Wednesday's Word of the day:

Study n., pl. -ies.
    1. The act or process of studying.
    2. The pursuit of knowledge, as by reading, observation, or research.*
  1. Attentive scrutiny.
  2. A branch of knowledge.
  3. studies A branch or department of learning: graduate studies.
Mike continues to study for his interview by going to the Library and reading up on the face of local businesses in Colorado Springs and working on behavioral interview questions that he may be asked in the interview.

Yes, I know what you are thinking, but Mike, I am out of school now, I don't have to study anymore! To that I say, WRONG! Everyday is a day to study, if you are not growing, you are dying! And this job search time has really helped me to realize this. If you are out with me right now in the world of unemployment land, do yourself a favor and start studying. Be prepared for that interview before you even get it, don't wait to get it. I believe that if you act "as if" then when it is time to be, you will be ready! If you have any questions on this, or need help with interview questions to be studying please please please email me at mikebaker7@gmail.com. I would be glad to help you along anyway that I can!

Those are my thoughts of the day! I apologize to daily readers for it being a while since the last post, but man this studying things is tough!

So that's what we did... Check out the POLL to the RIGHT ---> Yeah, right over there. And tell us what you think. Do you like this layout better, or the old layout better, or KEEP TRYING MIKE!

Web 2.0 for your Job Search?

In my quest to find all things job search related I came across a really cool website. It is like an "interactive" resume website. It allows you to add all of your experience similar to a resume, but then takes it a step farther allowing you to add pictures (I added my ugly mug, and a KU Business School pic) and then change the color scheme. Then you can post it to the web, print it off as a PDF (making a super cool, new-age, funky kind of resume - instead of the old boring one you probably have now) or you can keep it private just for employers to search!

Pretty cool, check mine out and then sign up for your own!

Check it out and let me know what your thoughts on cool new things like that for people in the job market!

Day 1: The Job Hunt

I woke up this morning, and guess what?

I realized that today is a NEW day! The sun, my sun, was already up and shining! Man I have a great life! And being laid off from a job I didn't love anyway, well that doesn't define me as a person. That doesn't mean the world has come to an end and life as we know it ceases to exists. No, this just means that there is something bigger and better out there for me and my family.

I am so excited about the opportunities out there for me right now! I know you are thinking, what opportunities, have you seen the economy Mike? Sure I have seen what is going on in the economy. But the economy does not change who I am as an employee, a father and a husband. I am still a valuable asset, and I realized that more this morning than ever.

You see there are still jobs out there, a ton of jobs. Even in a tough economy! Just pull up the old monster.com or careerbuilder.com; there are 1,000's of jobs for a guy like me. And of course if you know me at all then you would know I would always look at the positive side of things, so it probably comes to know surprise that I also realized that now is the BEST time to be looking for a job. Yep, crazy I know! But let's look at a couple other things right now:

First, the housing market. Isn't it a PERFECT time to buy a house right now? Interest rates are still pretty low (anything around 6% is still a good rate - how many of those from another generation remember paying 8% or 10% interest on a house - and probably thought that was a good deal). But there are so many great deals on houses right now, and some honest and hardworking people that just need to sell their house to move for a job, or need a bigger house for a growing family, or maybe just fell on tough times and can no longer afford their home! So, there are a ton of houses on the market right now, and back to Economy 101, when supply outgrows demand, prices go down! Good for people looking to buy a home!

Second, the auto industry. Isn't it a PERFECT time to buy a car right now? Despite what you may have heard, the credit markets aren't siezed up and the cash from banks hasn't dried out. There is plenty of money to lend for a car right now. Sure, like getting a mortgage, it is tougher to get that loan on a car. They scrutinize your credit, make you bring in more and more things to document that income and maybe they are asking for a little down payment right now, but they still have the cash to lend! Secret tip # 237 (coming from a guy that just spent over a year working in this industry) if you are are not already, go become a member at a Credit Union. But do your homework first. Call around find out about their lending practices. Find out if they do loans for their membes only or if they lend indirectly at car dealerships for anyone that qualifies for their programs. Some credit unions will only lend to you if you are a member, some will lend to anyone, the rules are changing, but ask first! Here is what is great about a credit union. Many are non-profit, so as the year progresses and they have MORE money coming in than going out they loosen their guidelines for lending. They lend to riskier credit, because they have the money to do so. So that means for you, a better interest rate and easier access to credit! Cool thing about credit unions, once you are in, you are in. Don't screw it up and they will take GREAT care of you! I know there are a few credit unions out there right now that are sending out letters to their members with car and home loans allowing them to defer their payments for November and December! That's a GREAT way to spur the economy, huh?! Anyway... from the dealership side of things it is also a great time to buy. Dealerships are hurting right now, so that means the want to deal. Remember the supply and demand theory from above! Shop right, be picky, and here is the best trick of all... WALK AWAY! You will get the BEST deal on the lot. Give them your phone number and WALK AWAY! I promise they will call you and lower their price! Remember ask this question, it is polite but down to the point, "Is that the best you can do?" Then WALK AWAY! You will pay $1,000's less for your car, the dealer will STILL make a healthy profit, it's a WIN-WIN for all parties involved!

Now, I know you are asking the question, "Well that's great and all, but how do the housing and auto markets make it a great time to find a job?" Well, I am glad you asked! Here's the deal, the job market, running opposite of the housing and auto markets is a bit different. There is more demand than supply right now. So, more competition if you will. But here is what is great about searching for a job right now. Those companies that are highering right now, are more than likely one of two things; 1. They are in a recession proof industry - hmmm good place to be working in a tough economy. or 2. They are growing right now - hmmm good place to be working in a touch economy. Right now, what you have to do is differeniate yourself from others applying for that job. Read posts from recruiters that are on the internet right now. They give GREAT ideas on how to differentiate yourself from the pack. They talk about questions you should plan on being asked at interviews and how to answer them best. Most importantly, make a plan for yourself. Plan where you want to be in a year, 5 years and 10 years. And make sure you are on that path right now.

Those of us who are unemployed have a unique opportunity now. I know it may seem more like doom and gloom, heck, I am going to file for unemployment today, UNEMPLOYMENT, sounds scary doesn't it, but I truly believe we are in a unique situation. We have the ability to search for a job that will fill two roles, satisfying our wants and needs, and those of our future employers. Times are tough, blah blah blah, I get it! But I have also heard enough. It is time for all of us to do our part to step up this economy. An economy that is founded by us, the everyday consumer. When 2/3rds of the economy is driven by consumer spending then we as consumers are responsible to bring this economy back around. My gameplan for making a difference in this economy is to get a great job. A higher paying job. One that will allow me to purchase that big screen tv along with putting more money in savings! I am going to do my part to spark the economy, what are you going to do?

Thanks for listening today! Remember, today is a new day, and regardless of where you are in the world, even if it is a little cloudy in your neck of the woods, I'll teach you secret tip #1, (in a low whisper) the sun is still shining... shhhhh don't tell anybody that one! Ahhhh just kidding... tell everyone! Let everyone out there know that your sun is still shining. It will allow that other person to look inside of themselves and find their sun too! My sun is still shining, and I lost my job yesterday, oh boo hoo, who cares! Pity Party, table of one, ahh Mr. Baker we have you a great seat right next to the bathroom! No No No... I am telling you right now to get your head out from underneath the covers and go searching for you sun. I found mine! It is shining brightly, oh, and I think it needs a diaper change! Gotta' go!

Love to all,

MLB

Another Casualty of the Economy!

Well Mr. President - Elect Obama...

... I hope I was right when I voted for you on November 4th, 2008 because officially at 9:30am Mountain Standard Time I become another casualty of the economy!

Yes it is true, this morning I was notified (along with about 20 other people) that I was laid off. Now, good thing I have going for me is this is the 2nd of the 3 jobs I have had since college ended that I have been laid off from, so I do feel a bit experienced! But, nothing, NOTHING, can really prepare you for this. And while it is a bit scary, I also have a peace and calmness about the entire situation. This job, while fun and great to work out of my house, just wasn't my dream job. It was a good job, a very good job, but I wasn't doing what I loved! And now, I get a chance to A. Figure out what it is that I love and B. Find a job that completes that love!

So, if you have any ideas out there for me, please call/email me at: 719-210-7309 or mikebaker7@gmail.com!

Thanks to all those that continue to read this blog. I think I have the time now, so I hope to be able to get daily updates out to everyone as to how the job search/love finding is going!

Also, check me out on You Tube; http://www.youtube.com/mikebaker7
Right now I have been having fun commenting on other peoples videos, so if my videos don't make any sense, just remember some of those videos are me making comments on other peoples videos (I just realized I basically said that twice - kind of funny - so I'll leave it in there! HA!). But soon enough I hope to do some daily, hourly, minutely, all daily video blogs! Should be fun! What do I have to lose! Definitely not my job... I already lost that! HA!

Peace and God speed to all,

MLB

Letter to the Editor

Here is my letter to the Editor that I sent in to the Gazette. I have yet to hear if they will publish it or not, but here are my thoughts on the Economy today:

Dear Community,

This economy is ours to change. Yes, yours and mine to change. It is our economy. And it is the greatest economy in the world and we the consumer drive it's growth. Do not be fooled by the evening news, newspapers, and news stories on the front page of yahoo.com that try to trick you into believing the economy is sinking, that the banking system is drying up or that owning your own home will never happen again thanks to some rotten apples in the mortgage industry. None of this is true. We are the biggest, the strongest, the most resilient economy in the world. And we will boom again, this is one promise I can assure you will come true. Remember the Savings and Loan Crisis of the 80's and 90's which ended in the failure of 746 savings and loan associations in the US? Currently there are only 90 banks on the Fed's current watch list of banks that might fail in the next 12 to 18 months, far off from the almost 750 savings and loan associations of the 80's and 90's. It is inevitable that our economy will take off, that bankers will loosen their tight grip on money and lend more freely and that you the consumer will continue purchase and grow this economy. None of these things are in question.

The only question is; When will you allow this to happen? That's right it is your choice. You must chose to turn off the negative thoughts about this economy. You must look for that new job, that promotion. Have you looked at monster.com lately? There are currently over 1,000 jobs posted on monster.com within 20 miles distance of Colorado Springs and another 4,800 jobs available just a $9 FREX ride to Denver! There are plenty of companies hiring and unfortunately plenty of jobs that go unfilled each day.

We all understand that the number of foreclosures in Colorado has affected our economy. Our rental market vacancy rate is decreasing, meaning more and more people are gobbling up the available rental units. According to the University of Denver rental vacancy report Colorado Springs is currently at 9% vacancy rate for the first quarter of 2008. Down from a high of 12.6% just two years ago, and this with basically the same total amount of rental units available. And why do I bring this up? Because home is where the heart is. And if you think that you lost your home to foreclosure, look around you. Look hard. Do you see it? It's right there. It is your friends and your family. It is their love for you that makes a home. They are proud to call you mom, dad, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, grandfather, grandmother or just friend. They do not care that your address has changed. They do not care if you own or rent your home. They do not even care if you need a couch to crash on for a while. You are family, you are a friend. You are loved, loved in your heart; therefor you ARE home.

So don't let someone else tell you how you should feel. You are Colorado Springs, you are America. You believe in yourself and your hometown. You believe the economy is how it really is. Perception is reality. How do you perceive it to be right now? I know what I perceive. I perceive that we live in the greatest country in the world. I perceive that we still are the strongest economy in the world. That is my reality, join me in this thinking will you friend?
